A Big Thank You to Massachusetts Maritime Academy Students

We were honored to welcome a group of 35 students from Massachusetts Maritime Academy to our recent community meeting in Hot Springs.

Over the past month, these students have been working tirelessly across Madison County, supporting flood recovery efforts through debris removal with Mountain Valleys Resource Conservation & Development, as well as demolition work in both Hot Springs and Marshall. Their hands-on support has made a real and meaningful difference for communities still navigating the aftermath of the flood.

During their visit, the students sat in to learn more about the municipal and community-level response in Hot Springs—how recovery efforts have evolved, where things stand today, and the long road toward full recovery. They also heard the story of how Rebuild Hot Springs Area came to be, and how we collaborate closely with Madison Alliance for Rebuilding Communities to ensure coordinated, community-centered rebuilding efforts.

The group asked thoughtful, engaging questions and brought a genuine curiosity to the conversation—exactly the kind of perspective we hope to see from future emergency management professionals. As a parting gesture, they even shared commemorative coins featuring their school and department logo, which was a very appreciated (and very cool!) surprise.

To all of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy students: thank you for your hard work, your commitment, and the energy you brought to Madison County over the last month. We wish you continued success as you move forward in your studies and careers in emergency management. Our communities are stronger because of people like you.

We wish you the best of luck as you continue your education in the important field of Emergency Management
